ILLUMINATING QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.  Hebrews 11:1

RAVE JAN 28-FEB 3

It has been a year now since I posted my first rave on my weblog “by russet” and before that I was sending out my rave via my own party list that I have been accumulating since Feb 04 when I gave my first party. I want to take this opportunity to thank all my friends, party list and subscribers to the weblog for their support who have followed me all these years. It has been an awesome experience living here and meeting some of the most amazing people on the planet. I hope you will continue to follow my new website where my rave will reside along with all the zany, trippy ideas we have come up  with to entertain and educate as well as offer handcrafted clothing and organic T shirts with a marketing twist that as far as I know has not been done on the web.

Now my two partners, Jerah and Krimo, and a few other talented artists have collaborated with me on the new website which will launch on Feb 1 and everyone will be sent an email on that Monday to check it out.   Clothes made in a little room in my home in Sarasota now will be available worldwide courtesy of the net (the world is truly flat). And my vision is to include different parts of the community as a backdrop on my photo shoots each month so we can showcase the energy, uniqueness, and talent of this place.

ESTABLISHMENT REVIEW

Went to the just opened “green” Holiday Inn behind the airport on Tuesday to hear WSLR DJ’s spin and have a drink and bite to eat. Good crowd showed up. Perette opened the event spinning international tunes then Norman took over. I must say I was liking the decor. It has an art deco feel with some great choices in furniture and colors. The outside patio with a fire pit and lots of seating is eco friendly as well. The bar is good size with a snappy bartender. We even met the chef. If they had a DJ on the weekends it might be able to draw a nice crowd as it has the feel of a hotel in Miami without the pool on the patio and the flowy drapes. The only two drawbacks I see is the location and the fact that it will probably draw more business travelers than tourists. It is worth checking out to see how fantastic green can be.

Thank you all for attending my “Winter Wonderland” Party on Dec 19th and making it the best party I have ever thrown. My estimation was about 200 people came thru the house that evening. All the guests were well behaved and polite. The variety of people that attended made up such an eclectic element along with the outdoor ambiance and indoor wonderland full of twinkling lights and candles.  Drummers showed up later in the evening with hulahoops and even a didgeridoo. The music was awesome and Brian had the big Yamaha speakers cranked up. The cops came at 1:30 instead of their usual midnight but we still partied on till around 4 am. I think I may do it again in May or early June.

 BAR AND RESTAURANT BEAT

Casa Italia, a premier Italian market and deli, and a place I love, is having their 25th anniversary on Dec 5 from 11-1 pm. Complimentary food and wine and music. This is a great find for Italian goodies and cheeses and olives that only the locals know about. It is located  at 2080 Constitution right off of Tamiami Trail.

I highly recommend Vizen, a sushi restaurant in Gulf Gate, one of the best sushi places in town and way off the beaten path, except for those who live in that area.

Patricks, best burger in town, still has their 1985 prices in place for a big fat juicy burger full of flavor.

Barnacle Bills has a great oyster and burger special from 2-4 pm in their downtown restaurant. Buy one get one free.

MoZaic, 1377 Main St. is hosting Wine & Women from 6-7 pm on the third Thursday of each month. Nov 19, tonite, will feature Syrah and Shiraz. $20. Every Saturday from noon to 3:30 pm they have a wine tasting. $15 and receive a $10 gift certificate toward your next meal.

 KUDOS

Circus Rosaire” a documentary that chronicles the lives of the Rosaire family and its history of animal performances, received the Independent Spirit Award for Best Florida Documentary at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. This is a wonderful film that I saw at the Film Festival here in Sarasota. They have a Big Cat Habitat and Santuary where you can go and see the animals perform up close.  Their weekend tour and training demonstrations will begin Friday, November 27th.  Gates open 12:30, demo starts 1:30.  Same for Saturday and Sunday throughout the winter season. Reservations are required: (941) 371-6377. 7101 Palmer Blvd.

 THINGS THAT ANNOY ME

The Sound Ordinance which nobody seems to think about until an establishment closes, is alive and well here in Sarasota. You think a community based mostly on being a destination experience, where people visiting like to go out at night and spend money, would embrace the night life scene and provide a way for it to thrive. But that is not the case. Steel Can Alley in Gulf Gate recently closed it doors because of the ordinance and the owner would look for a “friendlier spot outside of unincorporated Sarasota County”, according to the Herald. The city had an ongoing issue with Esca, now closed, when they had live music outside on their upstairs patio. The season is upon us and it is OUTDOOR time. Get Real city leaders. A vibrant, interesting, eclectic mix of people require an environment to attract them to go to besides going to dinner at 7 then home by 9.

Jan. 10 – Final Fundraiser for Undefeated @ Ace’s Some of you know that the first time I ever sang in public was just a little over two years ago. I still remember shaking like crazy as I stepped on that stage at Ace’s and opened my heart and my voice. That night started it all, including Ace’s blues jam, and the club has been my “home turf” ever since. So I guess it’s fitting that the fine people at Ace’s (thank you, Renee!) are getting behind us to host our final fundraiser before we go into the studio. We’re doing pretty well (see right sidebar), but we’re still short of our goal. Some of my favorite local artists have volunteered to come out and pitch in, plus we’ll have gifts and prizes from LJB supporters and local merchants.  4:00 – 8:00 PM – No Cover, 343 Palma Sola BLVD., Bradenton, Florida 34210    941.795.3886
